The European EN 16005 standard has been in effect since April 2013. This legislation applies in all countries that are members of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN).

What Does the EN 16005 Standard Cover?

The EN 16005 standard regulates people’s safety during the use of automatic pedestrian entrance doorsets and is mandatory for all new installations. While existing installations of automatic doors are not subject to EN 16005, these may have their safety assessed as part of official maintenance works and be modified to comply with the standard if necessary.

The EN 16005 Regulation Replaces Existing Standards

It is important to know that all existing national standards and regulations regarding automatic pedestrian doors have been withdrawn and replaced by EN16005 if they do not comply with this standard.

What is Expected of You?

New installations

  • New installations of automatic doorsets must comply fully with the EN 16005 standard.
  • You are required to perform a risk assessment during the sales process together with the customer/client and/or user. The assessment’s results determine the final design of the door and any safety features.
  • The final commissioning of the automatic door must be done jointly with the door's manager/owner. In this way, the manager/owner is made aware of all the functions of the door. The manager/owner is responsible for the automatic door's daily safety and functionality checks.
  • During delivery and commissioning of the door, manuals must be provided, the content of which must meet the conditions described in the standard.

Maintenance of automatic doorsets is mandatory

  • EN 16005 stipulates that power-operated door sets must receive periodic maintenance at least once a year. This maintenance must be performed by an authorised service company and must be documented in writing. If you fail to comply with the standard and a safety issue occurs that is demonstrably due to negligence, you may be held liable.
  • Existing older doors may be inspected in detail and assessed against the EN 16005 standard during maintenance. This allows for the identification and documentation of any deviations from the new standard’s specifications, after which a proposal can be made to the door’s owner or operator to carry out the required modifications.

The standard places great emphasis on user safety. Additional features contribute to improved visibility and help prevent impact or crushing.

What are the Possible Consequences of Non-compliance with the EN 16005 Regulation?

Stricter regulations often have consequences, and the EN 16005 standard is no exception. If the installation of an automatic doorset does not comply with the standard and a safety issue occurs after its subsequent commissioning that is demonstrably due to negligence, you could be held liable. That is why maintenance is so important for automatic doorsets.

Which doors are not subject to the EN 16005 standard?

The EN 16005 standard does NOT apply to the following types of power-operated doors:

  • Vertically moving doors
  • Doors on elevators
  • Vehicle doors
  • Powered freight doors or gates
  • Doors used in industrial processes
  • Partitions
  • Doors outside the reach of people (e.g. machine guards)
  • Vehicle access control doors and barriers
  • Access control turnstiles
  • Platform doors (train, bus, metro)
  • Manually operated sliding doors

The above-mentioned applications are subject to other more specific regulations.
