It is the second Golden Age, where growth and prosperity are on the rise again, the city is a dynamic hive of production and the population is rising. In the streets of Amsterdam North, Gerrit Boon - a talented, yet humble carpenter - began his business, not realising that the birth of a legendary institution was about to happen. As you continue to read, you will get to know us a bit better and understand why we do what we do - and why we do it with the honesty and passion that we do.
Gerrit’s only son, Jacob, ran a successful and respected business for many years, and in 1944, with no heir of his own, he placed an advert in a local newspaper to find a suitable candidate to take over his life’s work. Jacobus (Koos) Huber answered the advert, and soon found himself at the helm of a thriving compnay - which he relocated to Edam in 1970 as a result of accelerated growth. And so our rather unusual name was born – Boon Edam.
Today, Boon Edam is very much part of an authentic and close community. The business provides many jobs in the local area, and is active in event sponsorships and cultural preservation. People throughout the area know the Boon Edam enterprise, and proudly acknowledge its part at the heart of the local community.
Koos was the grandfather of our current CEO, Niels Huber - who continues to lead the family business in a quietly confident way. This third generation leadership places a lot of emphasis on talent, and keeping the company continually growing.
Invented in 1888, by Philadelphian Theophilus van Kannel, the revolving door was designed to solve the problem of a large amount of air coming into a building. The system of three or four wings around a central cylinder dramatically reduces drafts and noise pollution, and makes heating or cooling the inside space more efficient. It was at this point that the ‘always open, always closed’ principal was born.
This style of door also allow a higher number of people to pass through a space quickly – simultaneous entering and exiting - so it is only fitting that the first wooden revolving door was ordered during a time of growth in Amsterdam.
We work with the philosophy that there was a time when all was right with the world. Where we shopped at speciality stores because it was there that we received the best expert advice as well as knowing we were getting the best sourced product or service. We visited the green grocer, the butcher and we put our trust in the pharmacist dispensing from glass jars behind his wooden counter.
These were the good old days, where old fashioned principles and values mattered and following through on your promises was valuable. This was a premium age, and we at Boon Edam take you back there. Back to the future of heartfelt expertise and honest professionalism.
The business is now in its 145th year, employs 1,317 people globally, and has distributors caring for every corner of the world. The Huber family has always had strong values, and this remains true in how we both lead and live within the Boon Edam community. It is a culture which starts from the top. We believe in the power of a team, and share our successes as one. Collaborating with our clients, colleagues and partners is what drives us and keeps our customers coming back for more.
In 1988 we acquired a presence in the United States of America, where we saw further growth - not only with regards to our colleagues, but also from the introduction of a wide range of security barriers and solutions. Security is an important and rapidly expanding area for us, and this product portfolio extension has seen exciting and prestigious partnerships being formed in order to provide solutions for our clients.
We have evolved from that first wooden revolving door into a mini-multinational organisation that conceptualise, engineer, design, manufacture and install a range of traditional and contemporary entry solutions. Our range includes energy efficient revolving doors, technologically advanced high security doors and portals, robust turnstiles, innovative speed lanes and wide lane access gates.
Our wide variety of premium standard products with endless opportunities to level up in areas which matter most to your project – allows us to guide you easily to the perfect entrance for you. Collaboration is what is important to us, and our people understand the difference in requirements between a busy hospital entrance, a high-end lobby, a highly sensitive data centre or pharmaceutical security access area.
Boon Edam works with architects, contractors, system integrators, facility managers, security experts and building managers, and over time have grown a loyal network of happy customers who consider us to be the premium choice. This is based on the fact that we consistently and continually offer real added value to the project partners who put their trust in us.
Our clients keep coming back because they recognise that we, and of course our products, are valuable to them. We share our knowledge and findings, invest a lot of time in research and development, and can proudly claim to know the most about our products and how to achieve an optimal user experience – for all. Attention to detail is important, and it really is the small touches that matter.
Boon Edam are proud to say that we grow our people professionally and personally, and we enjoy bringing people together towards a common goal or solution. We have evolved from being simple product providers to masters in our craft. This means that our combined skills and knowledge allow us to focus on experience-based solutions.
The value we add comes from the expertise that we share; we are not sales-focused, but instead solution-driven. We are committed to making you feel welcome and secure. We promise it as a brand, but we believe it as Boon Edam people.
No matter where you are in the world, our values and vision remain consistent. Whether you are collaborating with us in China, Australia or the Netherlands – you can be assured of the same level of professionalism and competence.
United, we understand our client and end user’s pain points, and know exactly how to eliminate them. We listen, research, test and learn and, universally, are confident that we understand the unique scenarios which require these solutions. Aesthetics, security and user experience are at the forefront of our minds.
One thing we are sure about is that if Gerrit Boon were alive today, he would be proud of what his workshop has grown-up to be.

Safety and Sustainability Matters
When it comes to practicing social responsibility, we think both globally and locally. As a major player in entrance technology, we are constantly reviewing each part of our global business. We take this area of our business very seriously and invest a lot of time and energy into taking both small and large steps along the road to a better world.
Our offices are fitted with roof-top solar panels, eco toilets, motion-activated light sensors in all our spaces, large windows letting in natural daylight and our powder coating process is both kind to the environment whilst still being significantly more durable than conventional finishes.
We believe that our corporate social responsibility goes a lot further than just legalities and compliance. Responsible principals are embedded in our organisation and cover our values, ethics and codes of conduct. We are, at heart, a family business and are intricately involved in our local community development and event sponsorships. Our people are supported and encouraged to learn, grow and participate in the mentorship of others as well – it’s in our company culture.
We are serious about taking strong initiatives to reduce transport costs and, as such, have invested in packaging solutions which can be 100% recycled as well as substantially reducing our door packaging to ensure a considerable reduction in waste materials and transport space and weight. It is important to us to stay dedicated to being around for another 140 years and beyond.
One of the secrets to our success is our people. As the entry experts, we have the top professionals in their field working hard behind to scenes to deliver the best products to you. In this series, we meet them and bring you some interesting conversations about the unique part each person plays in the ultimate entry solution.
