Hotel Lutetia – History Repeating Itself
Paris, France, April 2018 – We are proud to announce that Boon Edam France has been hard at work installing a bespoke wooden revolving door into the 4-star boutique Hotel Lutetia – which is on the verge of being reopened this spring.
Walking into a Rediscovered History
The Hotel Lutetia has a story which is quite unusual. Since its first opening in 1910 many flagship events have taken place. Beginning with the board of the famous Parisian store 'Le Bon Marché' making a decision to open a modern, palace-inspired, luxury hotel in Paris, directly across from their famous store in the Left Bank.
When it came to the naming of this second Left Bank landmark, the board reached back to the origins of Paris itself, and took the city's Roman name: Lutetia.
The Hotel is an iconic landmark and is situated in the vibrant Saint-Germain-des-Prés area of Paris. It is the only grand hotel on the Left Bank. Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Picasso, Matisse and Josephine Baker where among regular visitors to the hotel.
Tailor-made Revolving Door for a Listed Building
Boon Edam had previously installed the first wooden revolving door in the hotel during the mid-1980s. However, when ALROV bought the hotel their objective was clear: make this 4-star hotel and listed historic monument, the first palace of the Left Bank in Paris.
The hotel closed for 2 years in 2016 for a complete renovation and restoration and our original wooden revolving door was uninstalled. This meant that we could once again work together to perfectly meet the client and architects clear objectives.
Functional Beauty with 4 Wings
We began the specification at the concept phase with famous French architect Wilmotte, working on an adaption of our Tourniket revolving door consisting of 4-wings with an internal diameter of 2800, free flow system on the curved walls in case of fire escape and a heater in the canopy. One prerequisite was that the revolving door also needed to be used as an emergency exit.
The Hotel Lutetia is set to be a modern, grand hotel designed for contemporary living: 184 designed bedrooms, 47 suites, 2 penthouse suites with private access to terraces as large as 74 m² and boasting an unrivalled 360-degree view of Paris.
